It’s exactly what it sounds like. I got a 2009 iMac from a friend for free. The display was moderately working (vertical bars and such) and he had nothing to do with it.
- Intel i5-750 (4c4t, 2.66Ghz)
- 4GB DDR3
- 1TB HDD <– Useful!
Throwing Ubuntu server on it went very smoothly. It turns out that when there’s no desktop server and the display is just set to put out a tty, the issues with the display go away. The display would only even work if I put in
nomodeset in the GRUB parameters, which is good because it’s currently sitting in my room.
Currently it’s just acting as a Samba NAS-type thing. The speeds are pretty garbage (20 MB/s at best) but it’s good when I have photos or videos that I want access to but don’t need on my computer’s hard drive.
I have transmission installed on it in case there’s ever anything I want to torrent (so I don’t need to have my desktop or laptop on overnight).
I have it listed on Craigslist and some other things, but if I don’t end up selling it, I have some ideas for it. It’s powerful enough to be a server for some non-demanding games like Minecraft and maybe even CS:GO.
I could also use it as an OctoPrint server, freeing up a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B that I could use for something else.
